After posting the entry below mentioning the markings on the flowers of Hedge Woundwort I went out into the garden and noticed a bumblebee making its way around the flowers of the Stinking Irises (Iris foetidissima).
 Their patterns are considerably more intricate with the same purpose: to guide the bees into the flower like landing lights on a runway.
