A diary of back garden botany, urban ecology, rural rambles and field trips to the middle of nowhere...

Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea) are coming into flower about now. I grew these from the seeds of a single Foxglove in the garden last year and they offer an interesting insight into genetic diversity.
The one on the right has plum-purple flowers like its forebear. The one on the left is a lighter shade of purple as though suffused with white. The one in the middle is snow white apart from purple speckles inside the flower. In turn the seeds from each Foxglove may or may not develop into one of the same colour, though a shade of purple is most common.
I find this kind of background information intriguing but then again flowers should be enjoyed for what they are and Foxgloves are are a thing of beauty.
